The start of the rains in Malawi brings the most amazing trasnformation throughout the entire country. The dry and dusty landscape that leaves you thinking “how will anything ever grow here?!”, suddenly blooms with greenery and life. The maize fields that were prepared weeks in advance sprout and bring a sense of contentment with them. The build up of the clouds bring dramatic skies and vivid sunsets, making everything seem larger than life.

The rainy season has breathed some life into Blue Zebra Island Lodge, transforming Nankoma Island into a vibrant green sanctuary. This has made our resident guinea fowl very happy as they peck away at the tasty bugs and insects.
We have been so lucky to have our longest repeat guest – the African Pitta return to nest on the island at the end of last year. The colourful bird with the cheerful chirp has really put on a show for us this season! The trumpeter hornbills make their presence known, their distinctive calls echoing through the treetops, while the shrill calls of kingfishers add to the symphony of sounds of the island.
Some exciting updates on the lodge side, in January we unveiled our latest room addition—Sandpiper, an executive chalet designed to elevate your stay. Featuring elegant interiors, modern amenities, and stunning views of the sparkling Lake Malawi. Our next addition to the lodge is under construction as well. We will have in up and running in the coming months.
Recently, our dedicated team completed first aid training to ensure they are equipped to handle any emergencies with confidence and care. The team is looking forward to the start of the season and cannot wait to show off our island to our dear guests!
Cheers for now,
The Blue Zebra Team
